What is LASIK?
LASIK eye surgery is used to correct refractive errors. It is a treatment that reshapes the cornea in order to produce clear vision. The LASIK refractive eye surgery procedure can treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, and reduce patients' dependency on contact lenses and glasses. Individuals who suffer from these conditions experience blurred vision due to the refractive errors that impede the focusing ability of the eye.
During LASIK eye surgery a predetermined amount of corneal tissue is removed to provide an effective treatment option. This reshaping of the cornea improves the eye's focusing power and enhances patients' visual acuity.
The LASIK Procedure
Your eyes will be anesthetized (using drops; no injections are needed). A precise, motorized instrument is used to create a hinged flap of tissue on the center of the cornea. A computer, controlled by your surgeon, is used to deliver cool pulses of ultraviolet light cleanly and precisely.
During the LASIK procedure, lasers smoothly sculpt the corneal surface. Each cool pulse of the laser evaporates only a small amount of corneal tissue - about 1/500th of the thickness of human hair.
You will not need patches or stitches. LASIK surgery typically takes between five and fifteen minutes for both eyes while the corneal flap is replaced. Because the corneal tissue has extraordinary, natural bonding qualities, so no stitches will be needed.
Most LASIK patients notice a dramatic improvement in their vision within hours after the procedure. Vision may still fluctuate day to day. It may take 3-6 months after surgery for vision to stabilize. Every patient is different.
Types of LASIK surgeries
Wavefront - this is a high-quality, high definition customized technology that allows measurement of your individual eye and that does not use standard data to determine surgical corrections. This means that the doctor can customize your lens to you personally.
LASIK Results
More than one million Americans undergo LASIK each year. It's the most popular vision surgery. Approximately 1.3 million Americans had LASIK surgery in 2005 (Market Scope).in the country.
Information from the FDA indicate that complications occur in just 1 to 5 percent of patients. LASIK treatment provides patients with exceptional results in most cases, with many patients experiencing 20/20 vision or better following LASIK eye surgery.
